Rob Canfield Calls for Congressional Term Limits, Pledges Maximum 12 Years of Service

Brick, NJ — Rob Canfield, Republican candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 4th Congressional District, today announced a firm pledge to support congressional term limits and to personally serve no more than 12 years if elected — the equivalent of two terms in the United States Senate.

“I’m not running to make a career in Washington,” said Canfield. “I’m running to do the job, fix what’s broken, and then come home. That’s why I’m committing right now to a hard 12-year limit — no exceptions.”

Canfield contrasted his pledge with the tenure of the incumbent, Rep. Chris Smith, who has held office continuously since 1981. Smith was sworn into Congress more than 40 years ago, a full decade before Canfield was born — despite the fact that Canfield is already old enough to legally run for President of the United States.

“At some point, experience turns into entrenchment,” Canfield said. “When one person has been in Congress longer than most voters have been alive, that’s not representation — that’s permanence.”

Canfield also called out what he described as growing hypocrisy within political circles that routinely call for term limits while simultaneously backing one of the longest-serving members of Congress in American history.

“You can’t argue for term limits in theory while defending a 40-plus-year career in practice,” Canfield said. “If term limits matter, they have to apply to everyone — including incumbents.”

Under Canfield’s pledge, he would voluntarily step aside after 12 years, regardless of political opportunity or seniority. “I’m not here to collect titles, committee gavels, or pension credits,” he added. “I’m here to fight for the Jersey Shore — to protect constitutional rights, crush the debt racket hurting families, and make life affordable again — and then pass the torch.”

A local small-business owner and certified firearms instructor, Canfield says his campaign is about restoring accountability, not preserving Washington’s status quo.

“Public office should be service,” Canfield said. “Not a lifetime appointment.”
