Gubernatorial Candidate Decries Misuse of Taxpayer Funds and Calls for Attorney General's Resignation
Brick, NJ – Rob Canfield, Republican candidate for Governor of New Jersey, has expressed strong opposition to Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin's recent decision to join a multi-state lawsuit against firearm manufacturer Glock, Inc. The lawsuit alleges that Glock's pistols can be easily converted into fully automatic weapons using aftermarket devices known as "Glock switches."
"Attorney General Platkin's participation in this lawsuit is a blatant misuse of taxpayer dollars and a direct attack on our constitutional rights," stated Canfield. "This action not only undermines the Second Amendment but also diverts critical resources away from addressing pressing issues facing New Jersey residents."
Misallocation of Resources
Canfield criticized the Attorney General's focus on legal actions against firearm manufacturers, arguing that it detracts from more urgent concerns such as crime reduction, economic development, and public health.
"At a time when our state faces significant challenges, the Attorney General's priorities are misplaced," Canfield asserted. "Pursuing baseless lawsuits against lawful businesses does nothing to enhance public safety or improve the quality of life for New Jerseyans."
Call for Resignation and Disbarment Over Glock Lawsuit
Citing a violation of the oath to uphold the Constitution, Canfield called for Attorney General Platkin's immediate resignation and disbarment.
"By engaging in actions that infringe upon constitutional rights, Attorney General Platkin has demonstrated a disregard for the very principles he swore to protect," Canfield declared. "Such conduct is unbecoming of his office and warrants his resignation and disbarment."
Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act
Canfield highlighted the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) of 2005, which grants firearm manufacturers immunity from lawsuits seeking to hold them liable for the criminal misuse of their products by third parties.
"The PLCAA was enacted to prevent exactly this type of frivolous litigation," Canfield noted. "Holding manufacturers responsible for the illegal actions of individuals is both unjust and counterproductive."
Comparison to Pharmaceutical Industry
Drawing a parallel to the pharmaceutical industry, Canfield emphasized that firearm manufacturers, like pharmaceutical companies, should not be held liable for the misuse of their legally manufactured products.
"Just as pharmaceutical companies are not sued for the illegal use of prescription drugs, firearm manufacturers should not be held accountable for the criminal actions of individuals who misuse their products," Canfield explained. "This principle is fundamental to ensuring fairness and justice in our legal system."
Commitment to Constitutional Rights
Canfield reaffirmed his commitment to defending constitutional rights and ensuring that government officials are held accountable for actions that infringe upon those rights.
"As governor, I will steadfastly protect the constitutional rights of all New Jersey residents and ensure that our leaders are held to the highest standards of accountability," Canfield pledged. "We must focus on effective solutions that uphold our freedoms and address the real issues facing our communities."
